New Holland methane-powered tractor for the US market

New Holland T61.80 methane tractor
Introducing the New Holland methane-powered tractor, poised to revolutionize farming practices across the United States.
New Holland – February 8, 2022
New Holland Agriculture North America proudly unveiled today the U.S. arrival of the groundbreaking T6 Methane Power tractor – a world first in production-ready methane-fueled machinery. This launch represents the successful conclusion of an extensive, years-long initiative dedicated to engineering and delivering a tractor series that champions the adoption of more ecologically sound fuel alternatives within American agriculture.
“The T6.180 Methane Power stands as a testament to New Holland’s forward-thinking commitment to alternative fuels, embodied in our Clean Energy Leader strategy. It signifies a substantial stride towards decarbonizing the agricultural sector, and this transformation is happening now, as this sustainable tractor has entered full-scale production and is accessible to our clientele beginning this 2022 season,” stated Michael Cornman, Livestock and Dairy Segment Manager for New Holland Agriculture North America.
The T6 Methane Power provides equivalent performance to its diesel counterparts, boasting the same 180 horsepower, 740 Nm of torque, and durability, all while offering the potential for up to 30% lower operating expenses. Operators will also appreciate the fuel versatility, as it can run seamlessly on either biomethane or compressed natural gas (CNG).
In comparison to the emission standards set by European Stage V regulations, the T6 Methane Power generates a remarkable 98% less particulate matter. When fueled by biomethane, it can achieve a 10 to 15% reduction in CO2 emissions, effectively creating a negative emission profile. Its simplified aftertreatment system utilizes a maintenance-free, three-way catalyst, eliminating the need for complex components such as exhaust gas recirculation and selective catalytic reduction, as well as diesel exhaust fluid.
The T6 Methane Power is powered by an all-new NEF 6.7-liter engine, specifically crafted for agricultural applications by FPT Industrial, leveraging the company's extensive 20+ years of experience in natural gas powertrain technology. To date, FPT Industrial has manufactured over 50,000 natural gas engines.
The gas tanks, with a capacity of 49 gallons, are strategically positioned within the T6 Methane Power, mirroring the placement of diesel tanks on the standard T6 model. This design preserves excellent visibility from the operator’s cab and ensures unhindered access. Fuel storage beneath the cab has been optimized, accommodating existing tire sizes and track width configurations. Additional options, such as mid-mount valves, are also readily available. For prolonged operation between refueling, a front-mounted range extender provides an extra 71 gallons of fuel capacity, connecting seamlessly to a port on the tractor’s front. The tractor also features gas connection points at both the front and rear, allowing for the integration of additional fuel storage solutions mounted on trailers and implements.
T6 Methane Power, powered by biomethane: Paving the way towards zero-carbon agriculture.
The T6 Methane Power tractor is a central component of New Holland's Energy Independent Farm concept, completing the cycle of a true circular economy – from cultivation to energy production and back to the fields – a fully CO2-neutral system.
Farmers can cultivate energy crops and utilize agricultural waste to generate biomethane, fueling their T6 Methane Power tractors with this sustainable resource to achieve near-zero CO2 emissions. Livestock and dairy farmers can amplify this virtuous cycle by producing biomethane from manure, actively removing CO2 from the environment and achieving a carbon-negative footprint. Farmers can further complete the circular economy loop by applying the byproducts of bio-digestion as natural fertilizers to their fields, orchards, or vineyards.
T6 Methane Power Tractor to be showcased at 2022 World Ag Expo
The T6 Methane Power tractor will make its inaugural public appearance in the United States at the 2022 World Ag Expo, taking place February 8-10, 2022, in Tulare, California. Visitors can view the tractor on display at the New Holland booth within the south exhibits at the International Agri-Center.
