Introducing the Seventh-Generation Fendt 700 Vario Tractors

Fendt – August 26, 2022

Fendt unveils a completely reimagined 700 Vario series, built from the ground up, offering a broadened power range extending to 300 horsepower for diverse operational needs. This new generation boasts a redesigned engine, the availability of a 60-inch gauge option, the integrated FendtONE platform for both in-cab and off-board control, and an advanced Fendt Cargo front loader – establishing this series as a versatile leader in the global agricultural market. For the first time, the 700 Vario achieves a top speed of 60 km/h. Groundbreaking maneuverability, derived from innovations found in larger Fendt models like VarioDrive and a revolutionary cooling system, defines this class of tractor. Thus, the Fendt 700 Vario once again redefines industry benchmarks.

Since its debut in 1998, the Fendt 700 Vario has consistently earned prestigious awards and remains Fendt's most successful tractor range. Farmers worldwide rely on these machines – whether for cultivating arable land, managing grasslands, highway transport, or operating front-end loaders. Previous generations of the 700 Vario are prevalent on medium-to-large farms and within the fleets of agricultural contractors across Europe, North America, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand.

The seventh generation introduces a lineup of five models – the Fendt 720 Vario, 722 Vario, 724 Vario, 726 Vario, and Fendt 728 Vario – delivering power from 203 to 283 horsepower (147-206 kW) according to ECE R120 standards. Fendt’s DynamicPerformance (DP) system provides an additional 20 horsepower on the Fendt 728 Vario DP, intelligently adjusting power output on demand to maximize efficiency. The flagship model achieves a peak performance of up to 303 horsepower. This extra power is available dynamically, independent of travel speed or specific implement connections, even during stationary PTO operations.

Exceptional tractive force combined with remarkable fuel economy

Engineered to meet global demands, the Fendt 700 Vario prioritizes a favorable power-to-weight ratio, high performance, adaptability, and responsible resource utilization. The 7.5-liter AGCO Power 6-cylinder engine has undergone a complete overhaul to align with the expanded power spectrum. Exhaust gas treatment utilizes a diesel oxidation catalytic converter (DOC), a diesel particulate filter (DPF), and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) – eliminating the need for exhaust gas recirculation and ensuring compliance with emission standards worldwide, including Stage V in Europe. Maintenance-free hydraulic tappets further enhance engine reliability. The powertrain integrates this engine with the renowned Fendt Vario transmission.

Intelligent all-wheel-drive management is a hallmark of Fendt VarioDrive. This system eliminates the need for manual adjustments when transitioning between field and road work, seamlessly distributing power to both axles based on demand. In field operations, full tractive force is engaged, while on roads and curves, stresses are minimized. The ‘pull-in-turn’ effect gently steers the machine during turns, resulting in an exceptionally tight turning radius and reduced soil compaction.

The innovative low-speed Fendt iD concept, borrowed from larger Fendt tractors, governs the design of all key components – engine, transmission, hydraulics, and cooling system – based on the principle of ‘high torque – low engine speed.’ This approach enables the Fendt 700 Vario to achieve peak torque even at reduced RPMs, contributing to significant fuel savings. The rated engine speed is only 1,700 rpm. During typical work, the engine operates quietly between 1,400 and 1,700 rpm. The new Fendt 726 and 728 Vario can reach a top speed of 60 km/h at just 1,450 rpm. At 50 km/h, the engine runs at 1,200 rpm, and at 40 km/h, it operates at only 950 rpm. The Fendt 728 Vario’s maximum torque of 1,450 Nm is achieved at a mere 1,300 rpm, providing ample pulling power and acceleration with minimal fuel consumption.

Setting new standards in power-to-weight ratio, maneuverability, and ground preservation

With a power-to-weight ratio of just 30.5 kg per horsepower and a compact footprint, the Fendt 728 Vario delivers exceptional maneuverability and minimizes ground pressure. Flexible ballasting options at the front and rear allow for adaptation to varying work conditions. A gross vehicle weight of up to 15 tonnes enables its use as a robust towing vehicle.

The exclusive Concentric Air System (CAS) ventilation and cooling concept, inherited from the Fendt 1000 Vario, is designed for low engine speeds, compact construction, and fuel efficiency. Driven by its own hydraulic motor, it operates independently of engine speed. This system adjusts flexibly to demand, providing quiet and efficient cooling. The compact cooling package enhances maneuverability and maximizes efficiency. Innovative high-performance fans force air into the cooling pack, allowing for reduced fan speeds and up to 40% less drive power compared to conventional systems – power that can be redirected to traction. The slim 56 cm diameter of the fan contributes to a sleek bonnet design and enables a generous 52-degree steering angle.

Optimal tire pressure minimizes slip and ground compaction. The fully integrated Fendt VarioGrip tire pressure control system maximizes ground contact and boosts tractive power by up to eight percent. During road travel, air pressure is increased to reduce rolling resistance, saving an additional two percent in fuel consumption (as demonstrated by the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences, Agricultural Economics Soest 2014). Drivers can conveniently control tire pressure via the dual-line system through the in-cab terminal. Fendt VarioGrip is available as an option from the factory for both flanged and stub axles, and for row-crop configurations with single or dual tires, as well as with wheel weights.

Exceptional versatility for global requirements

Numerous tire options are available for the Fendt 700 Vario. The Fendt 726 and 728 Vario models come standard with large 650/85R38 tires (2,050 mm diameter). For medium-sized farms, customers can opt for tires with the 650/65R42 dimension (1,950 mm diameter) for the rear tires. The Fendt 720, 722, and 724 Vario models are equipped with this dimension as standard.

The 60-inch gauge is prevalent in North America, Australia, and South Africa, primarily for row crop farming. For the first time, the Fendt 700 Vario is available in a 60-inch (row-crop) configuration across the entire series. Both single and dual tires are available for row-crop applications directly from the factory.

Enhanced safety even with heavy loads

The optional top speed of up to 60 km/h at just 1,450 rpm, a comprehensive chassis and safety package, and numerous rear hitching options make the Fendt 700 Vario a true transport specialist. The safety concept includes a dual-circuit brake system, Fendt Reaction Steering, a brake light and deceleration assistant, and Fendt Stability Control (FSC). FSC minimizes body lean at speeds above 25 km/h and reduces roll, enhancing safety and driving comfort.

An innovative trailer brake assistant is now available as an option for the Fendt 700 Vario. This system ensures smooth towing, even on hilly terrain. A sensor measures trailer thrust via the transmission. When descending hills, if the tractor detects excessive trailer push, the trailer's pneumatic brakes are activated. Trailer Brake Assist will be available from the end of 2023.

Intuitive operation with FendtONE

In the new generation of the Fendt 700 Vario, the tractor and implements are controlled simply and individually via the multifunction joystick and the optional 3L joystick within the FendtONE onboard platform.
