The New Holland T4 Electric Tractor: A Revolution in Agriculture
New Holland – August 28, 2023
The future of farming has arrived, powered by a new era of electric innovation. For 2024, New Holland Agriculture introduces the T4 Electric Power – the first fully electric utility tractor with integrated autonomous capabilities. This groundbreaking machine defines a new segment – the Utility Electric – focusing on delivering solutions for vastly more efficient field operations. The T4 Electric Power directly addresses the mounting challenges faced by modern agriculture – rising operational costs and a dwindling workforce – all while reaffirming New Holland’s dedication to fostering sustainable farming practices for generations to come.
The T4 Electric Power isn’t just a tractor; it’s a transformative innovation ushering in a new age of agricultural technology. Perfectly suited for lower horsepower tasks, it excels in diverse applications, including mixed farming, hay and forage production, dairy and livestock operations, municipal groundskeeping, greenhouse environments, and specialty crop cultivation like vegetables and orchards. This tractor represents the culmination of New Holland’s commitment to electrification, joining the T7 Methane Power LNG (Liquified Natural Gas) and the T6.180 Methane Power in the brand’s growing portfolio of alternative energy solutions. Equipped with a state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery pack, the T4 Electric Power provides a smooth and consistent power delivery with maximum torque even at the slowest speeds, ensuring an entirely new driving experience and seamless operation during demanding loader work and everyday farm routines.
“This tractor signifies a significant leap forward for growers, producers, and municipalities alike,” states Lena Bioni, product marketing manager for New Holland Agriculture North America. “New Holland is offering farmers a powerful convergence of cutting-edge technologies – electric propulsion, autonomous features, enhanced performance – all within the versatile frame of a utility tractor, laying the foundation for a more efficient, sustainable, and resilient future our customers are striving to build.”
Reimagined Performance and Battery Technology
Beneath the hood of the T4 Electric Power lies a sophisticated battery system paired with a fully electrified drivetrain, engineered to deliver relentless power and productivity. Featuring a substantial 110-kWh maximum energy storage capacity within a 400V nominal high-voltage circuit, it generates 74 hp (55 kW) of rated power and 65 hp (48 kW) of PTO power. Utilizing a highly efficient high-voltage powertrain, incorporating integrated cooling features from established mass production suppliers and currently available materials, establishes this tractor as a pioneering and revolutionary solution.
In comparison to traditional diesel-powered models, the T4 Electric Power delivers demonstrably superior performance. It boasts a robust 4-wheel drive system, a proven 12x12 transmission, a clutch-less electronic power shuttle reverser, and all the conventional power outputs expected of a diesel utility tractor. This includes a rear electro-hydraulic PTO, drawbar, multiple rear remotes, mid-mount valves, and a durable, complete 725LU mechanical self-leveling front loader with a 3rd function and 84'' bucket included. The tractor’s exceptional control, enhanced precision, and rapid responsiveness substantially increase field capacity by reducing application cycle times.
The tractor’s fully electrified drivetrain provides silent operation with high torque and instantaneous response, even at the lowest speeds. These intrinsic characteristics of the electric motor, combined with the 12x12 electronic power shuttle transmission, allow even inexperienced operators to confidently run implements without struggling with gear selection and throttle control. Meanwhile, seasoned operators will appreciate the infinite speed adjustments achievable through precise motor RPM control. The smooth and gradual power delivery at low speeds and consistent output at higher speeds enhance control and precision during field operations.
“The quiet electric motor of the T4 Electric Power offers a significant advantage and is an invaluable asset in noise-sensitive environments,” Bioni explains. “Its reduced noise and vibration levels compared to diesel engines are particularly beneficial when operating in environments such as equestrian barns or on college campuses while mowing lawns or plowing snow.”
The T4 Electric Power was meticulously designed by CNH Industrial engineering teams in the United States (Burr Ridge, Ill., Detroit) and Italy (Modena) with state-of-the-art features and components that prioritize durability, longevity, and maximized uptime. Considering light, medium, and heavy-duty applications throughout its daily task routines, the tractor is estimated to provide up to 4 hours of average runtime. This can be extended to 8 working hours for applications with lower energy demands. This extended runtime empowers operators to complete a wider range of tasks without needing frequent recharging, further boosting overall productivity and minimizing operational downtime. The tractor can be recharged using diverse energy sources, including conventional grids, solar panels, biodigesters, and wind power, in both Alternate Current (AC) and Direct Current (DC). Utilizing DC fast-charging systems, a full charge can be achieved in just one hour.
Furthermore, the T4 Electric Power offers on-demand power availability whenever and wherever a customer requires it. This is the primary objective of the practical and convenient Exportable Power feature. Equipped with standard 110V and 220V outlets commonly found in workshops and farmyard electrical installations, the tractor can serve as a reliable power source for electric power tools such as welders, drills, and cutting machines.
Technology Drives Productivity
Smart autonomous features and innovative driver assistance modes are integral to the T4 Electric Power tractor's character, enhancing daily farming operations through Precision Solutions & Telematics (PS&T), improved safety, comprehensive diagnostics, and streamlined service. Focused on addressing the challenges of increased total cost of ownership, these advanced features set the T4 Electric Power apart in the market.
Driver-assisted features – Follow Me Mode, the Invisible Bucket, and 360 Degree Awareness – are complemented by fully digital and connected functions like Over the Air Updates, Live View, and Map Maker, making this tractor the first of its kind worldwide. The tractor utilizes cameras and sensors integrated into the Smart Roof, while modes are activated via a modern touchscreen display, resulting in enhanced performance and safety both inside and outside the cab.
A Bold New Blue
A tractor as innovative as the T4 Electric Power demands a styling that reflects its forward-thinking nature. The new Clean Blue paint scheme signifies a New Holland tractor powered by an alternative fuel source. First showcased on the New Holland T7 Methane Power LNG tractor, this striking shade of blue is complemented by CNH grey decals, while a completely redesigned hood features powerful LED headlights and worklights with illuminated accents.
“You’re witnessing the style of sustainability,” Bioni adds. “Alongside the captivating paint scheme, customers can expect the T4 Electric Power tractor to redefine operating comfort with in-cab ergonomics, a new digital instrument cluster, and a color touchscreen additional display.”
The T4 Electric Power Tractor to Debut at Farm Progress Show
The T4 Electric Power tractor will make its public debut at the 2023 Farm Progress Show, August 29-31, 2023, in Decatur, Illinois. It will be on display at the New Holland booth #967 in the northwest quadrant of the show grounds. The tractor is anticipated to be commercially available in North America with select dealers in early 2024.
